Sunlighthouse

VELUX demohouse "Sunlighthouse" will be built in Pressbaum, Austria.

The CO2 neutral house is built to show that it is possible to build climate-friendly houses in mountainous areas.

"Sunlighthouse", to be built of wood from local forests, is faced with some challenges:

The house is built on a very hilly ground and orientated towards the northeast in stead of the south, which is the usual orientation for solar energy houses.

Trees, adjoining buildings and the sloping ground throw long shadows during much of the day, which calls for creative solutions to ensure sufficient daylight in the house.

"Sunlighthouse" will be built to the Active House principle, will thus generate its own energy, have a sound indoor climate with plenty of daylight, and be CO2 neutral over the course of its life even when including the CO2 emission during the building phase.

The construction of "Sunlighthouse" started in November 2009 and will be finished in the second quarter of 2010.
