The VELUX FOUNDATION
www.veluxfonden.dk
The VELUX FOUNDATION has a special funding programme to support elderly persons in maintaining an active lifestyle and to promote research in gerontology (physical, mental and social changes in older people as they age), geriatrics (health and disease in later life) and ophthalmology (diseases of the eye).
In addition, the foundation makes donations to major projects to promote scientific, artistic, cultural and social purposes.
In 2008 the VELUX FOUNDATION decided to increase its commitment as from 2009 to support active elderly people. Until now the foundation has allocated DKK 10 million for this purpose. With the allocation the foundation aims to support elderly people in continuing their social life and communities as well as in achieving their individual goals of an active life their whole lives.
Examples of 2010 donations of the VELUX FOUNDATION:
-
The VELUX FOUNDATION donated DKK 5.5 million to CONCITO, Denmark's green think tank. The donation is intended to fund the think tank's work over the next two years on aggregate analysis and assessment of climate action in Denmark. The think tank's work was published for the first time in May 2010 in The Annual Climate Outlook of Denmark
-
A few years from now, eye drops may replace laser eye surgery as the treatment for eye damage in diabetics. That, at least, is the promise of cutting edge research being conducted at Aarhus University Hospital that has received a grant of DKK five million from the VELUX FOUNDATION to pay for the process of transferring the promising results achieved on pigs to the treatment of humans, and for increased research into the transformations in retinal blood-flow causing eye damage and blindness.
